Chapter 12

Dreena had been 100 percent accurate. Lauder had been awestruck, dazzled, dazed, consumed and a million other terms for stunned as hell one could come up with. But more important, he was ecstatic. On the outside, he appeared to be in complete control. On the inside, however, a storm raged. One that could only be calmed by making unhurried love to Willow, which he intended to do.

The fact that she’d flown all this way to see him, to be with him, did crazy things to his body. Things, again, only she’d be able to remedy. Lauder’s heart pounded against his rib cage like a triathlete who’d just sprinted across the finish line in first place. With one hand, he collected the small bag by Willow’s feet, then inched her forward with the other.

Inside, Willow’s eyes darted around the one-bedroom suite. From the cream-and-turquoise walls, to the fully equipped kitchen, living area, and workstation littered with papers.

“Nice,” she said.

“Why don’t you make yourself at home, look around. I need to step out a quick second.”

Willow’s brow furrowed. “Where are you going?”

He chuckled. “I wasn’t prepared for you.” He needed protection.

Awareness lit her gorgeous face, then she nodded.

He never practiced unsafe sex, but if Willow had told him to take her right then, he would have abandoned all common sense. She gnawed at the corner of her lip, and he was tempted to snatch her into his arms and kiss her delirious, but he fought the desire. “I’ll be right back.”

On his way out of the room, he snagged the ball cap he’d packed. While he doubted anyone in Memphis would recognize him, he couldn’t be too careful.

Lauder damn near ran to the elevator, jabbing the down button in quick succession as though doing so would make the doors open any faster. A ding finally sounded the arrival, and Lauder grew all giddy inside. Entering the elevator, he stabbed at the button that would take him to the lower level.

Finally. He sprinted across the lobby, out the main entrance and toward the drugstore on the corner. He prayed they were still open at near nine in the evening. Yes, he thought when he saw the glowing OPEN sign. Before entering, he pulled the cap even lower on his head. All he needed was a picture of him purchasing a box of condoms in Memphis plastered all over the front page of the N&O.

In and out, Lauder hurried back to the suite. Inside, he heard the shower running. Entering the bedroom, he tossed all four boxes of magnum condoms on the nightstand. Creeping to the bathroom door, he eased inside.

Steam filled the room, but the silhouette of Willow’s body through the fogged-up glass shower door was unmistakable. Her every move proved to test his resolve. Join her played in his head, but he resisted the strong force pulling him toward the enclosure.

Instead, he snagged a towel from the rack and propped himself against the marble countertop and waited. She hummed a catchy melody, one he was sure he’d heard before but couldn’t quite put his finger on.
